Northern Governors In Nigeria Have Called On The S'East Governors To Call "The Rabid Kanu" To Order

Northern governors have urged their colleagues in the South-East to rein in the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, and other groups threatening Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Kashim Shettima, who is also the Governor of Borno State, said this after a meeting with the leadership of the Coalition of Arewa Youth Groups in Abuja, late on Sunday.

He explained that he initiated the meeting as the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum to find a peaceful solution to the threats facing the Nigerian nation.

The governor described the challenges facing the nation as largely political, which he noted, required political solutions.

Shettima said, “…I wish to call on the leadership of our brethren in the South-East to equally seize the gauntlet to rein in the excesses of Nnamdi Kanu and co.”

The governor also cautioned against criminalising or harassing members of the coalition of northern youth groups as doing so would not help efforts being made “to seek for an amicable solution to the challenges we are facing.”

He gave assurances that from the discussions so far held, members of the group were committed to the Nigerian project and would later this week; make public their position with regards to an earlier stance they took on national issues.

Also, the spokesperson for the coalition, Abdulaziz Suleiman, in an interview with journalists after the meeting, said consultations were still ongoing.

He said, “What we can all see is that this is a major development. We copy the northern governors all of our correspondences and the chairman of the NGF has taken the initiative to meet with us. Yesterday, (Saturday) we started the meeting in Kaduna.

“This is the first time we are meeting publicly with any leader. We issued a declaration in Kaduna to review the successes and we will let you know as soon as we take a decision.”
