A Complete Recount of Ballot Papers at Edo Elections Tribunal & at Court of Appeal is Our Prayer - PDP

The appeal filed at the Court of Appeal by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against a ruling of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal which aborted the complete counting of the ballot papers has been scheduled for hearing.

Court of Appeal sitting in Benin City will on Tuesday next week hear the prayer of the PDP and its candidate, Pastor OsagIe Ize-Iyamu, for completion of the recounting of ballot papers used in the 2016 governorship election which was aborted by the  tribunal last month.

The recounting of the ballot papers  for 3  out of 4 requested out of the 18 local government areas in the state was stopped midstream, when the Chairman of the three member panel Justice Ahmed Badamasi said the tribunal lacked the powers for its continuation.

The Tribunal had earlier ordered for the recount of the ballot papers following an oral application made by the  Counsel for the petitioners, Mallam Yusuf Ali (SAN), who also listed the affected local government areas as Egor, Akoko-Edo, Etsako-East and Etsako-West.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, are challenging the declaration by INEC of Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress  (APC) as winner of the election at the tribunal and have listed INEC, Obaseki and the APC as first, second and third respondents respectively.

Nevertheless the result of the recounting so far, which the court issued to all parties, showed glaring discrepancy in the total number of figures announced as results of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC) and the ballot papers issued during the exercise.

The report signed by the Assistant Secretary to the tribunal, Buhari Sani, for the tribunal secretary showed that the recounting exercise was concluded in Wards 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in Etsako West Local Government Area, Wards 1 and 2 in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area and Ward 1 of Egor Local Government Area.

For Etsako West Local Government Area, the recounts revealed that a total 8,432 ballot papers were issued in the five wards as opposed to 17,138 that was recorded in the form EC8A by INEC.

In Ward 1 of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, the recounts revealed that more ballot papers were used than the figures recorded on the Form EC8A at  3,206 ballot papers issued as opposed to 3,167 recorded by INEC.

The same is true Ward 2 of the local government, where recounts showed that 3,849 ballot papers were issued, while 4,161 was recorded on the Form EC8A by the INEC.

In Ward 1 of Egor Local Government Area, the recounts indicated that 3,217 ballot papers were issued in eight units of the ward, while 2,770 ballot papers were recorded on the INEC Form EC8A.
