Nigeria Medical Association boycots meeting with Obaseki, meets with Ize-Iyamu
Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Edo state, at the doctor’s house, Tuesday, boycotted a rescheduled meeting with the APC candidate, Godwin Obaseki, because he he had on two preious occasions dishonoured their invitation.
There was an interactive session organized by the association in August for all the candidates in the forthcoming election. Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP was there, Thomas Sadoh of the PPA, and candidates of other parties attended but Obaseki did not honour that invitation.
In September, precisely on Monday September 19th, another interactive session was scheduled by the NMA for Godwin Obaseki whereas Friday 17th September, one was scheduled for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the PDP to address the association.
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu addressed the doctors in the state abreasting them of his plan for “comprehensive healthcare, with emphasis on primary health care” for the state as stated in his SIMPLE Agenda.
But on his part, Godwin Obaseki, sent a cancellation notice to the NMA barely 24 hours to the scheduled meeting at 2.30pm at Doctors House. This notice was communicated to the association through their WhatsApp group.
Many doctors who had hoped to listen to the APC candidate discuss his plans for healthcare improvement in the state were disappointed. They all received a text message about the cancellation through their WhatsApp group communication platform which is monitored by Urhokpota Reporters secret cameras.
On a second thought perhaps, after much pressure and disappointment expressed by doctors for cancelling their meeting, Godwin Obaseki decided to reschedule the meeting for 1.00pm, after initially sending a cancellation notice.
The rescheduled meeting for 1.00pm did not go down well with the doctors who boycotted the event. Only the a handful of doctors, mostly Exco, who attended the session. The purpose of the meeting was defeated and many doctors who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said they are disappointed with Obaseki and impressed with Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
A resident doctor at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua also spoke to our correspondent and pledged to vote for the PDP because of the performance of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu at the NMA event.
“Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu appears to me to be a man prepared for the top job. He is not only prepared and aware of the challenges in the healthcare sector and how to tackle them, he also appears to me to be sensitive and concerned about the welfare of health workers in the state. I will give my vote to the PDP because of him.” Dr Comfort Ogbidi said.
The Edo 2016 election is slated for September 28 and it remains to be seen what the doctors would do to demonstrate their disappointment with Obaseki for dishonouring them.
